Choosing your coaching

Online personal trainer vs. workout app: what are you paying for?

Compare the plan, the feedback, and the support before choosing how you want to train.

A workout app and an online personal trainer can both help organize your training. The useful question is what happens when you have a question, your schedule changes, or the plan stops fitting.

Apps vary widely. Some offer a library of workouts, some generate plans, and some include access to a human coach. Compare the actual service rather than assuming that an app means no support or that every online trainer offers the same kind of coaching.

Who decides what is in your plan?

With a self-guided app, you may choose a program or receive suggestions based on the information you enter. This can be useful when you already know what you want and feel comfortable following the workouts independently.

With Holden Health online personal training, Kelsey builds a four-week plan around your goals, schedule, equipment, and fitness level. The workouts live in the Holden Health app, but Kelsey is the person providing your coaching.

What happens when the week changes?

If you can follow a routine without much outside input, a self-guided option may meet your needs. Check whether it lets you change training days, choose shorter sessions, or substitute equipment.

If you need help deciding what to change, look for a service that includes a conversation with a coach. Holden Health includes weekly accountability, a one-to-one Zoom check-in, private messages to Kelsey, and workout adjustments based on your progress and feedback.

For example, if you have less time than you expected, tell Kelsey rather than guessing how to rearrange the whole plan. The adjustment depends on your situation; there is no one busy-week schedule every client receives.

Does online coaching mean live workouts?

Not necessarily. Some services supervise workouts over video. Others provide a plan you complete on your own, with scheduled check-ins and support between them. Ask which model you are buying.

Holden Health's four-week online program includes weekly Zoom coaching to review progress and discuss the plan. It does not mean Kelsey watches every workout live. If you want a coach beside you while you train, consider one-to-one training in Plymouth.

Five things to compare before paying

  • Personalization: who creates the plan, and what information do they use?
  • Feedback: who answers your questions, and through which channel?
  • Accountability: are check-ins included, or do you review progress alone?
  • Adjustments: what happens when your equipment, time, or goals change?
  • Terms: what does the price cover, and what happens when the package ends?

What does Holden Health cost?

The current founding-client rate is $199 for four weeks of online personal training, plus a $4 online payment fee. The package includes personalized workouts, weekly one-to-one Zoom coaching, accountability, direct support, workout modifications, and progress tracking. Full access to the Holden Health app is included at no extra cost.

Start with a free consultation before arranging payment. Discuss what you need from coaching and ask about next steps after the four weeks. Check the online-training page for current package details.

Choose the support you will use

A self-guided app can be a reasonable choice if you want structure and feel confident making your own decisions. Individual coaching may fit better if you want someone who knows your situation, checks in, and helps you adjust.

Kelsey's online program welcomes beginners and people returning to strength training, whether they train at home or in their own gym in the United States. Read about Kelsey's experience and bring your questions to a consultation. The goal is to choose an arrangement you understand and can use.
