Choosing your coaching

Your first personal-training session: what to expect

Starting with a trainer should feel clear. Here is how to prepare, what to ask, and how to begin with Kelsey in Plymouth.

Holden Health·

If you have never worked with a personal trainer, the first question is often practical: what am I actually signing up for? Before worrying about which exercises you will do, get clear on the coach, the appointment, the cost, and the kind of support you want.

At Holden Health, personal training in Plymouth starts with a free consultation. A consultation and a training session are separate appointments. You do not need to book a workout before having that conversation.

Start with your goals and your real schedule

The free consultation with Kelsey lasts 30–60 minutes. It is a chance to discuss your experience, what you want help with, and whether working together is a good fit. Kelsey responds to consultation requests within 12 hours.

You do not need a polished fitness goal. “I want to feel less lost in the gym” or “I keep starting and stopping” gives you something useful to discuss. Think about the time you can realistically set aside and what has made past routines difficult.

Questions worth bringing

  • How would we start, given my experience?
  • How could training fit the days I am actually available?
  • How will we decide what progress looks like?
  • What support is included in the arrangement we are discussing?
  • How do scheduling, payment, and appointment changes work?

Understand the appointment and price

An in-person personal-training session with Kelsey is 60 minutes and costs $100. After your consultation, arrange your appointments directly with her. Discuss your preferred frequency and budget before settling on an ongoing schedule.

The free consultation is for deciding on a fit. It is not advertised as a free workout. Your specific exercises and session plan depend on the coaching arrangement you agree on, so there is no fixed first-day workout to memorize.

Know where you are going

Training takes place at Burroughs, at 41100 Plymouth Rd, Ste. B1-162, Plymouth, MI, the same location as Kelsey's group classes.

Look for parking near the clock on the south-facing side of the building. Enter through the doors by the clock, walk straight ahead, then turn left down the hallway. The gym is on your left. The training page has directions you can check before leaving.

Equipment is provided. Bring water, wear clothes and shoes you can move comfortably in, and bring any questions you did not cover during your consultation.

Choose the kind of coaching you want

One-to-one training gives you an individual appointment with Kelsey. If you enjoy training with others on a shared schedule, compare the group fitness program in Plymouth. Group classes have their own session dates, enrollment, and pricing.

If getting to Plymouth regularly is the challenge, online personal training offers personalized workouts, weekly Zoom coaching, and support between check-ins. It is a different service, with workouts you complete independently.

Get to know your coach before you decide

Kelsey has coached since 2011. She holds a B.S. in Exercise Science, an NPTI personal-training certification, an AFAA group fitness certification, and a Precision Nutrition Level 1 certification. Read her background and coaching approach, then use the consultation to decide whether you feel comfortable working together.

Your first step can be a conversation. You do not need to have the rest of your training routine figured out before booking it.
